1) Provide a daily routine and schedule. Let your child know what is expected so s/he can be responsible for fulfilling their part as independently as reasonably possible.
2) Prepare the evening before for the next school day. Make sure clothes, lunches and any other details are prepared, and homework has been completed and checked.
3) Have a clear, clean, undistracted place to study during a regular time each day to focus on learning. Allow a break between school and homework time.
4) Provide the right amount of support to assist your child in succeeding during homework assignments. Keep a positive attitude. Help them see their progress and feel successful.
5) Establish regular communication with your child’s teacher. Develop a partnership with the teacher and participate in school activities. Get involved and show your child that their education is important.
6) Teach problem solving skills and help your child learn to think.
7) While some rules are non-negotiable, flexibility in others can be an opportunity to teach negotiation skills and responsibility.
8) Children need approximately nine or ten hours of sound sleep each night. An unrushed morning with a balanced breakfast will set the tone for the day.
9) Expect your child to succeed. Provide the leadership and structure for them to be successful. Use positive discipline as required.
